Blue Demons Cruise to 6-1 Victory
CHICAGO – For the second time four matches, the DePaul women’s soccer team scored a school-record six goals. On Friday afternoon it was a 6-1 win over Northern Iowa that matched a 6-1 victory against Liberty on Sept. 5. Julianne Sitch and Erin Walter each scored twice as the club totaled five goals in the second half.
Sitch started the scoring with her fourth and fifth goals of the season in the first half. She struck first at 32:07 when Walter found her in front of the goal. Sitch took the pass, dribble past a defender and fired it past Panther goalkeeper Krista Thorley for the first Blue Demon goal.
It was Sitch again early in the second half for the eventual game-winner. Katie Kiene set up the play with a throw-in that Sitch gathered, turned and bounced it past Thorley to the short side of the net at 47:05. For Sitch, it marked the fourth multi-goal game of her career.
Walter and Kelly Lord opened up the match with three goals in a 13-minute span of the second half. Walter started the flurry with her first goal of the season at 52:24. Lord centered the ball and Walter fired a liner from the top of the box to make the score 3-0.
At 55:03, it was Lord’s turn when she knocked in her own rebound. Thorley stopped Lord’s first attempt, but couldn’t contain the ball. Lord regrouped and tapped it past the keeper for her second score of the season.
Walter tallied her second goal of the afternoon when Jennifer Dyer lofted in a cross from the left side of the box. Walter went to the short side and fired it past the right post at 65:53.
Northern Iowa (0-6-2) got on the board at 69:15 when Jillian Carroll knocked in a penalty kick past DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca. LaRocca and starting keeper Lindsey Deason combined for six saves on the afternoon.
The final goal of the day came from Amanda Marier at 69:37. Kelly DeBaene crossed the ball in from the left side where an open Marier sent it to the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
