Blue Demons Win C-USA Opener
CHICAGO - Julianne Sitch's penalty kick late in the match was enough as DePaul topped Houston, 1-0. The Blue Demons host TCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Wish Field.
CHICAGO – Julianne Sitch’s penalty kick with just under two minutes left in regulation gave the DePaul Blue Demons a win over the visiting Houston Cougars Friday afternoon at Wish Field. Sitch’s sixth goal of the season finally put the Blue Demons on the board after they came up short on opportunities throughout the match.
The first 88 minutes saw the two teams play to a stalemate. For the match, DePaul outshot Houston, 17-6, but were unable to find the net. Houston keeper Erin Ferguson was busy as she made six saves on the afternoon.
In a flurry in front of the goal off a DePaul corner kick, a Houston player was guilty of a hand-ball. Sitch lined up the penalty kick and sent it past Ferguson into the right side of the net at 88:04.
DePaul got back on the winning side after their four-match win was snapped at Northwestern last Sunday. Friday’s win ended a three-match Conference USA winless streak dating back to last season as the Blue Demons lost twice and tied a match to end the 2002 season.
Lindsey Deason finished the match with three saves while the DePaul defense held the Cougars to just six shots.
The Blue Demons aim for their second straight league win on Sunday when they host the TCU Horned Frogs. Kickoff is set for at Wish Field.
