Women's Soccer Wins C-USA Opener

Boxscore

CHICAGO – Three goals in the first half propelled the women’s soccer team over visiting Marquette, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field.  In the Conference USA opener for both teams, the Blue Demons knocked off the Golden Eagles for the third straight time.

DePaul got on the board early as Julianne Sitch scored her sixth goal of the year just over five minutes into the match.  As the Marquette defense was attempting to clear the ball, Sitch gathered it at the top of the box and fired a humpback line drive that found the upper left corner of the goal.  Sitch has now scored a goal in three straight matches and five of the last six.  She has also tallied at least a goal or an assist in seven of the eight matches this season.

Lea Hill opened up the match with two goals in less than five minutes just before halftime.  She scored her sixth goal of the season at 35:45 off a Jennifer Dyer throw-in.  Hill took Dyer’s throw and turned on a Marquette defender before lining a shot to the back of the net.

At 44:19, it was Dyer and Hill again teaming up.  This time, Dyer found Hill in front of the Marquette goal where Hill finished the play with her team-high seventh goal of the year.  Dyer now has four assists on the season.  Hill, who scored one goal in 2003, has found the back of the net in four of the last five games.  She also registered her second multi-goal game of the season against the Golden Eagles.

A scoreless second half saw the DePaul defense post their second shutout of the season.  It was the first shutout since the season-opening match with a 3-0 win over Central Michigan.  Goalkeeper Lindsey Deason totaled four saves on the afternoon and kept the pressure on the Golden Eagles with booming kicks to set up the DePaul offense.

Both teams finished the match with seven shots while DePaul held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.  After dropping the first seven meetings all-time to Marquette, the Blue Demons have posted three straight wins.  A year ago, DePaul won the regular season meeting before beating the Golden Eagles in the C-USA Tournament.

The Blue Demons play the first of four straight C-USA games on the road this Friday at Memphis.  Following that match is a meeting with Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon.  Sunday’s game at Saint Louis can be followed with live stats on www.slubillikens.com.
