Louisville Knocks Off Blue Demons

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Making their second appearance in Louisville since Friday, the DePaul women’s soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to the Cardinals in a BIG EAST match on Tuesday afternoon. Friday’s originally scheduled game was postponed when lightning and heavy rain entered the Louisville area. Louisville (7-1-1, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) struck twice in the first 25 minutes led by Monique Gjini. She scored the first goal of the afternoon at 6:09 when she took a pass from Jamie Craft and beat DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca. Just over 15 minutes later, Gjini was on the front end of a Cardinal goal as she assisted Jen Avila’s score at 21:28. She fed Avila to took the ball and knocked it past the far post for a 2-0 Louisville advantage. The Blue Demons were active in the first period taking seven shots compared to eight for Louisville. However, DePaul (3-6-1, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) couldn’t find the net as Cardinal keeper Joanna Haig finished the game with four saves. LaRocca totaled seven stops in goal while the Cardinals finished the match outshooting DePaul, 17-10. In the 69th minute, Gjini tallied her second assist of the afternoon on Craft’s fifth goal of the season to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home team. DePaul returns to Wish Field for a pair of BIG EAST matches this weekend. The Blue Demons host Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon before the West Virginia Mountaineers make a visit to Lincoln Park. Match Notes: DePaul’s season-high losing streak reached four matches… the four straight losses are a single-season high since dropping nine straight games in 2001… Louisville has won the last two meetings in the series… DePaul leads the all-time series, 6-5-0.
