Grant Gains BIG EAST Honor Roll Accolade
CHICAGO - A weekend sweep in the BIG EAST netted conference recognition for DePaul freshman Chelsea Grant.
Grant was named to the league's weekly Honor Roll after scoring the winning goal in the Blue Demons' 1-0 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday at Wish Field.
"It's pretty cool," Grant said. "There are four individual awards and five make the Honor Roll---that's only nine out of all those talented players in the BIG EAST.
"It's a pretty good accomplishment, especially since I'm a freshman."
Her stellar defensive play contributed to the team's seventh shutout of the season, tying a school record set in 2003. Combining with Dominique and Janina Locascio and Beth Perry in the back line along with goalkeeper Claire Hanold, Grant helped DePaul top Louisville 2-1 on Friday night.
"It's exciting that she got recognized for her performance, and that this is happening in her first year," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "She was very consistent throughout Friday and Sunday's games, and Chelsea is such an asset to our program."
Earlier this season, Tara Strickland was honored as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after her two goals sparked DePaul to a pair of season-opening victories in which the Blue Demons scored seven goals.
Dominique Locascio was named BIG EAST Defender of the Week and Hanold was Rookie of the Week after DePaul upset then-No. 11 Missouri 1-0. It was DePaul's first victory over a nationally ranked team.
