Women's Soccer Drops BIG EAST Match to Marquette

CHICAGO Michelle Scandora gave DePaul a 1-0 lead in the first half, but visiting Marquette tallied four second-half goals for a 4-2 decision in a BIG EAST match on Friday at Wish Field. The Blue Demons conclude the weekend on Sunday against USF.

DePaul held a 1-0 lead at intermission as the Blue Demon defense kept the Marquette chances at bay and forced the visitors into a number of long-range attempts. The Blue Demons applied pressure from the first whistle and in the 29th minute Kelly Semko found Shannon Williams on the left flank, but Williams’ attempt went just wide of the left post.

DePaul put the first goal on the board less than 10 minutes later when Williams was fouled just outside the penalty box. Scandora took the ensuing free kick from 19 yards and fired a low liner to the back of the net just inside the right post. Scandora’s third goal of the season came at 36:54.

A flurry of goals in a six-minute span saw Marquette tie the score, DePaul retake the lead and the Golden Eagles once again knot the score.

Marquette tied the match in the 55th minute when Katie Kelly converted a penalty kick following a DePaul foul inside the penalty box.

The Blue Demons didn’t waste any time and retook the advantage when Casey Mercurio found the net off a corner kick. Morgan Celaya started the play from the corner and found Williams at the near post. Williams got the ball across the mouth of the frame and Mercurio sent it home at 57:48.

Three minutes later, Marquette tied the match again when Anna Sawicki scored after a scrum in front of the DePaul net. Michell Compty sent a pass through the DePaul defense and Sawicki forced it home at 60:49.

Marquette (7-3-2, 3-0-1 BIG EAST) added the game-winner and an insurance goal in just a 41-second span with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Julia Victor found the net on an eight-yarder at 81:38 before Kristi Laurenzi headed in a goal off an assist from Lisa Philbin at 82:19.
