CHICAGO -- The DePaul women's soccer team will face two BIG EAST rivals this week as the Blue Demons welcome Marquette to Wish Field on Thursday while they travel to Cincinnati to square off with the conference's top squad in Xavier on Sunday.
DePaul (5-6-1) is fresh off its first BIG EAST win of the season on Sunday against Creighton and looks to keep the momentum rolling against Marquette and Xavier. The Blue Demons, who sit at 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play, have seen solid play all season from junior forward Franny Cerny as the Berkeley, Calif. native leads the BIG EAST with seven goals in just 12 matches. For her effort, Cerny was named to the conference's weekly honor roll on Monday.
Her partner in crime, Alexa Ben, has also been a force for the Blue Demons as Ben has notched four goals while dishing out an assist to tally nine points on the season. Between the posts, senior Lauren Frasca has seen five shutouts in 2017, posting three on her own while combining for two with Vanessa Nigg.
All five of DePaul's wins in 2017 have come via shutout, and the Blue Demons look to continue that pace as they have outscored opponents 17-14.
Marquette (8-4-1) is off to a 1-2 start in BIG EAST play, having defeated St. John's in its last outing 1-0 on Oct. 1. Through 13 matches, the Golden Eagles have tallied 16 goals on 185 shots, averaging 1.23 goals a match.
Marquette's offensive attack has been led by Darian Powell as the forward has netted four goals while dishing out four assists to tally 12 points on the season. Three other Golden Eagles, including Kylie Sprecher, Eli Beard, and Carrie Madden, have tallied two goals and three assists to combine for 21 points for Marquette.
In goal, Maddy Henry has paced the squad with five shutouts, making 63 saves in 1166 minutes of play. In 13 matches, Henry has allowed just 15 goals to post a 1.16 goals against average.
While DePaul is 5-3 all-time against the Golden Eagles at Wish Field, Marquette leads the all-time series with the Blue Demons 13-5-1. The Blue and Gold won the last meeting 3-2 in an overtime thriller in Milwaukee.
After battling Marquette on Thursday, the Blue Demons will head to Ohio to square off with Xavier on Sunday at noon.
Xavier enters its meeting with DePaul carrying the best record in BIG EAST play as the Musketeers are 3-0 against conference opponents. Prior to squaring off with the Blue Demons in Cincinnati, Xavier will battle Butler on Thursday in Indianapolis, placing their undefeated streak on the line. The Musketeers are off to a 7-4-2 start, going 4-4-2 against non-conference opponents. Through 13 matches, Sydney Schembri leads Xavier in scoring with five goals while Emma Westwater is close behind with four scores.
As a unit, Xavier is narrowly outscoring its opponents 16-15 in 2017 where the Musketeers own a 6-2-2 mark at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The Ohio-based team has tallied three shutouts this season, surrendering just one goal in BIG EAST play.
DePaul has dominated the all-time series against Xavier, winning all four meetings without surrendering a goal. Overall, the Blue Demons have outscored the Musketeers 11-0, winning their last meeting in Chicago 5-0 on Sept. 25, 2016 that saw Cerny record a hat-trick in the contest. Overall, Cerny has five career goals against Xavier, also netting two scores in the 2015 matchup.
Of note, DePaul's head coach Erin Chastain sits two wins away from the 100 career wins mark and could achieve this feat on Sunday if the Blue Demons are victorious in both matches this week.
