Pagone Honored by BIG EAST Conference
Oct. 4, 2010
CHICAGO – In the spectrum of DePaul’s soccer program, Lauren Pagone is the “Little Engine That Could.”
And after maximizing her talents like never before, Pagone was rewarded on Monday with the first weekly conference honor of her collegiate career.
The senior midfielder was named to the BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll, signifying that she was among the league’s top performers last week.
“It’s very exciting, and I didn’t really expect it,” said Pagone after her tying goal and golden goal led the Blue Demons to a 2-1, double-overtime victory over St. John’s last Friday at Wish Field at Cacciatore Stadium.
“All the hard work these four years has paid off. St. John’s was the best game of my career.”
The 5-foot, 4-inch Pagone scored the tying goal on a header off a well-placed corner kick from Tara Strickland. On the winning goal, Strickland again found Pagone, who beat the Red Storm goalkeeper far post.
Pagone is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST with three game-winning goals and is tied for 11th with her team-leading five goals.
“It is a great honor to be selected to the BIG EAST Honor Roll because we have such a large, competitive conference,” said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. “She is competitive and wants to win, and that attitude helps our team tremendously.
“Lauren has done a great job and really is such a wonderful example of a student-athlete who is maximizing her potential.
“I am so proud of Lauren and excited to see her continue to achieve great things the rest of the season.”
Pagone wanted to share her award with the rest of the Blue Demons.
“We have such a strong senior class, and actually everyone on the team has helped me maximize my potential,” Pagone said. “We’re all pushing each other, whether it’s at training or running in the offseason.
“I am so lucky to be with the girls on this team.”
Pagone and the Blue Demons face Rutgers at 3 p.m. Friday at Wish Field in a critical BIG EAST showdown.
