DePaul Soccer Programs Receives Academic Honors
October 5, 2017
CHICAGO - Success on and off the field has been the cornerstone for DePaul athletics, and the men's and women's soccer teams enhanced that reputation on Thursday as both squads were named to the United Soccer Coaches (formerly National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Team Academic Award honors list for the 2016-17 academic year.
A total of 813 soccer teams (282 men, 531 women) from throughout the United States were recognized by the United Soccer Coaches with its Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2016-17 academic year.
Among these programs are 195 schools receiving honors for both their men's and women's teams. DePaul was among the double winners as the men's soccer team, under head coach Craig Blazer, won the award for the 10th year in a row.
Coach Erin Chastain's program has earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for 15 consecutive years, with 10 years occurring during her tenure.
To qualify for the award, a team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players. DePaul's women posted a 3.52 GPA while the men's team accumulated a 3.32 during the 2016-17 academic year.
