Blue Demons Return to Wish Field

CHICAGO - The DePaul women’s soccer team plays at Wish Field for the first time since Sept.  19 and start a six-match homestand against Louisville.  The Blue Demons take on the Cardinals at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon before hosting Cincinnati at 1 p.m. on Sunday.  DePaul enters the match with a 5-6-1 overall record and a 1-3-1 mark in league play after losing at East Carolina and tying Charlotte last weekend.  Louisville sits atop the C-USA standings with a 3-0-1 league record and a 8-2-1 overall mark.  Cincinnati enters the weekend at 2-8-0 and 0-3-0 in C-USA action.

Looking at the Blue Demons:  2004 marks the ninth season of women’s soccer at DePaul University... Lea Hill and Julianne Sitch lead the club with 18 and 17 points, respectively...  Erin Walter has 12 points (3G/6A) followed by Jennifer Dyer (3G/4A) and Lauren Spacht (4G/2A) with 10 points each... DePaul has never had three players total at least 15 points in a season... Hill has a team-high eight goals with two assists while Walter leads the club with six assists to go with three goals... in two-plus seasons, Sitch has recorded a program-best 69 points, 26 goals and 17 assists... DePaul’s six goals and nine assists against Liberty on Sept. 5 are both school records... the club tied the scoring record in the 6-1 win against Northern Iowa on Sept. 17... head coach John Wilson is in his fifth season in Lincoln Park.

Scoring in Bunches: DePaul’s 29 goals through 12 games are on pace to break the program’s single-season record.  A year ago, the club set the top mark with 33 goals in 23 matches.  Twice this season, the Blue Demons have scored a school-record six goals in a match.  The nine goals in back-to-back matches against Northern Iowa and Marquette are the most in a two-game stretch.  DePaul’s 12 goals in the three games against UW-Milwaukee, Northern Iowa and Marquette tied a record set in 2002 with 12 goals against IPFW, Indiana State and Drury.  The Blue Demons are spreading the wealth as nine different players have scored at least one goal and five players have at least 10 points.

Nationally Ranked: With the flurry of goals early in the season, the team is ranked among the nation’s highest-scoring offenses.  Through games of Oct. 3, DePaul is 37th with 2.42 goals per game.  Prairie View leads the country with 4.75 goals per contest.

Sitch on Hermann Trophy Watch List: DePaul junior and preseason Conference USA Player of the Year Julianne Sitch is one of 25 student-athletes named to the preseason Hermann Trophy watch list.  The Hermann Trophy is annually awarded to the top men’s and women’s collegiate players.  The 25 players on the preseason list are considered to be among the top players entering the 2004 college season and are the ones to watch this fall.  A list of 15 semifinalists will be announced in November, with three finalists selected in early December.  The winner will be announced at a dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 8, 2005.

Last Weekend: DePaul went 0-1-1 in matches at East Carolina and Charlotte last weekend.  Following a 4-0 loss at East Carolina on Friday, DePaul erased a 2-0 first-half deficit against Charlotte on Sunday.  After taking a 3-2 lead in the second half, the Blue Demons allowed the tying goal with under five minutes left in regulation.  Neither team could score in overtime and DePaul settled for their first tie of the season, 3-3.

Looking at Louisville: The Cardinals enter the weekend tied for first place in the C-USA standings at 8-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in C-USA play... Tulane also holds a 3-0-1 league record through four matches... last weekend, Louisville tied Tulane, 0-0, and knocked off Southern Miss, 2-0... Jamie Craft leads the team with 19 points on nine goals and an assist while Louisville has outscored their opponents, 22-8... head coach Karen Ferguson is in her fifth season as head coach.  The series: DePaul leads the series, 5-3... a year ago in Chicago, the Blue Demons posted a 2-1 victory on goals by Amy Witt and Julianne Sitch.

Scouting Cincinnati: Sunday’s opponent, Cincinnati, enters the weekend at 2-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in C-USA action... they play at Marquette on Friday night... last weekend, the club lost matches at Southern Miss, 1-0, and Tulane, 2-1... Amy Mink leads the team with four points on a goal and two assists... the Bearcats have been outscored, 20-7, in their 10 matches... head coach Meridy Glenn is in her 22nd season.  The Series: The Bearcats lead the all-time series, 8-0... last season saw Cincinnati post a 1-0 win in Chicago... in the series, Cincinnati has outscored the Blue Demons, 23-2.

What’s Ahead: The Blue Demons continue their six-game homestand with matches against Houston and TCU at Wish Field.  The Houston Cougars play the Blue Demons at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 before DePaul hosts the TCU Horned Frogs at Noon on Sunday.  Both matches are the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
