Women's Soccer Drops Final Home Match
Fittingly, a pair of seniors scored for the Blue Demons on Senior Day, October 15, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Houston Cougars defeated DePaul, 3-2, at Wish Field. Seniors Jeannette Croce and Katie Kilby tallied goals for the Blue Demons as the loss dropped their record to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in Conference USA play. Houston improved to 3-5-1 in the league and 7-8-1 overall. The fireworks started early in the match as three goals were scored in the first seven minutes. Houston wasted no time as they scored their first goal at 1:24 when Nicole Aubuchon dribble past a DePaul defender from the left side to score. The Cougars struck again just 50 seconds later when Becca Smith took a pass from Kara Bullinger and put it past DePaul goalkeeper Marissa Czapka. DePaul answered Houston's second goal with a goal of their own in the sixth minute. Katie Hawkins gave Kilby a pass in front of the goal and she went around one defender for the score. The goal was the first of Kilby's career in her final match at Wish Field. From that point, the two teams played even until the Blue Demons tied the match at 2-2 in the 79th minute. With Shauna Erickson lined up for a free kick, Croce headed the shot from the center of the box to the upper corner of the net. The goal was Croce's third of the season and Erickson tallied her first assist. The tie didn't last for long as Houston came right back from the game-tying goal with a score of their own to make it a 3-2 match. Kristen Hogan scored the game-winner from in front of the net at 80:01.
The Blue Demons will finish the season with three matches on the road. Next weekend, DePaul will play at Tulane on Friday and Southern Miss on Sunday. The last match of the season will be on October 27 at Marquette.
