DePaul Stumbles at Connecticut

STORRS, Conn. – The DePaul women’s soccer team fell at Connecticut on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-0.  The Huskies scored two goals in the first half before a four-goal second period in BIG EAST action at Joseph J. Marrone Stadium.

 

Karyn Riviere tallied a hat trick, the second player this season to accomplish the feat against the Blue Demons, with the match’s first goal and two second-half scores.  Riviere’s first goal came at 8:15 when Niki Cross set up a shot from the left side of the penalty box.  Riviere’s took the pass and fired a shot to the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead by the Huskies.

 

Less than five minutes later, Brittany Tegeler made the second 2-0 and she collected a rebound off a stop from DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca and scored her second goal of the season.  Tegler’s goal came at 12:45 and was the final goal of the first half.  In the period, Connecticut (8-7-2, 5-3-1 BIG EAST) took 13 shots while holding DePaul without an attempt.

 

The Huskies struck twice in the opening minutes of the second half with Riviere starting the scoring at 47:59.  Her second goal of the afternoon was assisted by Elizabeth Eng who hit the post on her attempt.  Three minutes later, it was Meghan Schnur scoring her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Tegeler at 50:55 for a 4-0 Connecticut lead.

 

Riviere third goal of the afternoon came in the 61st minute when Tegeler sent in a cross from the left side.  Riviere trapped the ball and knocked in a shot from seven yards out at 60:26 for the hat trick and a 5-0 advantage.

 

The final score of the match came in the final minutes as Brittany Taylor and Alexandra Zedros set up the score for Maria Picard with a pair of passes upfield.  Picard finished the play past Sara Bandauski at 87:09 for the 6-0 final score.

 

DePaul (3-11-2, 0-8-1 BIG EAST) took seven shots in the second half with Lauren Spacht and Lea Hill totaling two attempts each.  LaRocca finished the match with eight saves in just over 75 minutes of action while Bandauski gathered a save in her 15 minutes in the net.

 

Match Notes: The six goals allowed were a season high… it was the highest goal total allowed since a 6-0 loss at Notre Dame on Sept. 16, 2005… since the program’s start in 1996, a DePaul team has allowed eight goals twice and seven goals on three occasions… Connecticut now leads the series, 2-0-0.
