Womens' Soccer Travels South For A Pair Conference USA Matches

The DePaul women's soccer team travels to Tulane and Southern Miss this weekend for a pair of Conference USA matches. The Blue Demons will play in New Orleans on Friday at 4 p.m. and in Hattiesburg on Sunday at 1 p.m. DePaul is 3-11 overall and 2-6 in Conference USA play.

Since winning three of five matches, the Blue Demons have dropped five straight entering this weekend. DePaul has been shutout three times over that span. The Blue Demons have been outscored in the second half, 20-8, by opponents this season. In the first 45 minutes, DePaul has scored seven goals while allowing opponents to score eight times.

In their last match, DePaul spotted Houston a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. They fought back and tied the match at 2-2 on a goal by Jeannette Croce at 79:22. However, the tie was short lived as the Cougars answered the Blue Demons with the game-winning goal at 80:01.

Offensively, DePaul is led by senior Jeannette Croce with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Christy Young leads the Blue Demons with three assists while scoring once. Goalkeepers Marissa Czapka and Lauren Geiger have combined for 101 saves while allowing two goals per game.

The Tulane Green Wave are 7-7 overall and 4-4 in league matches. They defeated South Florida in their last match, 3-2, on Sunday. In the all-time series, Tulane leads 3-1. The Green Wave won the first three meetings before DePaul won, 1-0, in Chicago last year. Head coach Eliot Perkins is in his second season and owns a 15-17 record.

Southern Miss enters the weekend at 4-4 in Conference USA and 7-6 overall. The Lady Eagles host Conference USA leader Marquette on Friday. Forwards Stacey Hall and Lindsay Canham lead the offensive attack. Hall has nine goals and eight assists while Canham has tallied six goals on the year. Head coach Matt Clark is in his first season at Southern Miss. The two schools have met twice with the Lady Eagles winning, 3-2, last year. The first meeting in 1998 was a 0-0 tie.

The final regular season match for the Blue Demons will be October 27 at Marquette. The Conference USA Tournament will be November 1-4 in St. Louis. The top eight teams based on regular season conference records will qualify for the tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis. Marquette is the defending tournament champion.
