Women's Soccer Closes Season with Loss at Villanova
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The DePaul women’s soccer team concluded the 2006 season with a 3-0 loss at Villanova on Sunday. The Wildcats scored twice in the first seven minutes and added a third goal late in the match.
Nicole Coia started the scoring for Villanova (15-2-2, 7-2-2 BIG EAST) in the sixth minute off an assist from Erin Byrnes. Coia took a pass from Byrnes in the middle of the penalty box and sent it to the back of the net at 5:46 for the eventual game-winner.
Just 51 seconds later Melissa Murowski knocked a shot past DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats. Erin Hardiman was credited in the assist on the goal at 6:37.
Villanova totaled 32 shots in the match while the Blue Demons were able to get off 10 attempts. LaRocca finished the afternoon matching her career high with 12 saves. The third and final goal of the match came at 88:23 when Athena Yiantsos scored on a rebound from a corner kick opportunity. Villanova totaled 14 corner kicks in the 90 minutes of action.
Shannon Williams led DePaul (3-13-2, 0-10-1 BIG EAST) with three shots while Lea Hill took two shots.
Match Notes: The 12 saves by Cara LaRocca tied a career high set earlier this season on Sept. 3 at Drake… the 32 shots by Villanova are the most by an opponent this season… the Wildcats leads the series, 2-0-0.
