DePaul and Villanova Ready for BIG EAST First Round
Oct. 24, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Just two weeks after the DePaul women’s soccer team last battled the Wildcats, the Blue Demons return to Villanova for BIG EAST Conference Tournament First Round action on Thursday afternoon. The two squads are set to face off at 1 p.m. CT at the West Campus Soccer Complex.
DePaul (8-9-2, 3-6-1 BIG EAST) earned its spot in the league tournament as an at-large seed. Adding to the intensity, the BIG EAST seeding came down to the final day of the regular season. After Connecticut defeated Providence with three seconds remaining in double-overtime, the Blue Demons were catapulted into the tournament’s final remaining spot.
Because the Blue Demons had the lower points-per-game average of the two at-large seeds—DePaul (1.0 PPG) and Rutgers (1.5 PPG)—they are tasked with Villanova (7-8-3, 5-4-1 BIG EAST), the National Division No. 4 seed.
Villanova enters the match after a taking a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Georgetown last Saturday, which earned the Wildcats the opening round home game.
Last time out for DePaul, the Blue Demons took on a nationally-recognized opponent of their own. On Friday, Oct. 19, DePaul welcomed rv/- Notre Dame to Wish Field for the Blue Demons senior day. After two scoreless periods and a scoreless first overtime, the Fighting Irish got on the board in the 106th minute to sink DePaul.
The winner of Thursday’s contest between the Blue Demons and Wildcats then heads to National Division No. 1 seed Georgetown for quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Oct. 28, at noon CT. DePaul battled Georgetown on the Hoyas’ turf on Sunday, Oct. 14. In that match, the squads took a scoreless tie into overtime where GU notched the game-winner.
