Maize's Big Hit Sends Blue Demons Past Fordham

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Morgan Maize couldn't have picked a better time for her first collegiate RBIs.
Maize's two-run double provided the winning margin in DePaul's 4-2 victory over Fordham Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak and left the Blue Demons at 5-6 on the season under coach Eugene Lenti.
DePaul seized a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Samantha Dodd reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Allie Braden's single to left field. Kirsten Verdun followed with a base hit to left that brought Dodd home and sent Braden to third. Mary Connolly's groundout to shortstop scored Braden.
The Blue Demons scored the eventual winning runs in the top of the sixth. Paige Peterson led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Ali Warren was hit by a pitch. Maize came through with a two-run double to left field.
Fordham (4-2) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Verdun came on in relief to nail down the save.
The Blue Demons will take on James Madison at 2:30 p.m. in their second game of the Leadoff Classic.
NOTES: Penna (2-2) went six innings giving up two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks... Braden was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Maize was 1-for-1 with two RBIs, her first collegiate RBIs... Dodd was 1-for-3 with a run and Peterson was 1-for-4 with a run... Verdun was 1-for-4 with an RBI and picked up her first save of the season... DePaul won the NFCA Leadoff Classic title last year.
