Peterson Concocts More Seventh Inning Magic for DePaul
Feb. 23, 2013
CLEARWATER, Fla. - For the second game in a row, the Blue Demons worked a little more of that seventh-inning magic.
Paige Peterson's two-run single in the top of seventh sent DePaul onto a 6-5 comeback victory over Pacific at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Samantha Dodd and Allie Braden ignited the late rally leading off the seventh with back-to-back singles. Kirsten Verdun walked to load the bases. After Megan Coronado struck out, Peterson ripped her base hit up the middle to score Dodd and Braden.
Pacific scored an unearned run off relief pitcher Kirsten Verdun in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on first and second when the DePaul left-hander struck out clean-up hitter Nicole Zapstoczny to earn the save.
Pacific (8-4) had taken a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third with Amy Moore's RBI single and an RBI sacrifice fly from Megan Allen.
DePaul (7-7) tied the game 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Peterson scored on an error.
But Hannah Penna reached on the error that scored Peterson.
In a 5-3 comeback win over UCF earlier in the day, DePaul had scored three times in the seventh inning.
As she had done against UCF, Dodd got the Blue Demons off to a fast start. She led off the game with a bunt single, advanced to third after a walk and fielder's choice and scored on Megan Coronado's sacrifice fly.
An inning later, Connolly singled and came around to score on Penna's one-out blast over the left-field fence.
The Tigers retaliated with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded, hit-by-pitcher to Melanie Habib and Megan Horn's infield single.
NOTES: Dodd was 3-for-4 with two runs scored... Braden had one hit and one run... Coronado had one hit and one RBI... Peterson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run... Connolly was 2-for-4 with a run... Penna was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run... Morgan Maize was 1-for-3 and Staci Bonezek was 1-for-3...
