ATLANTA – Behind an 8-2 victory against Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon, the DePaul softball team captured its 1400th win in the program’s 41-year history.

In the opening frame, DePaul (12-4) took advantage of a Yellow Jacket error that extended the inning to go up on Georgia Tech 2-0.  Catcher Jessica Cothern reached on error by Georgia Tech’s shortstop to put a runner on with two outs.  Five pitches later, right fielder Megan Leyva pushed a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on first and second.  On an 0-1 count, first baseman Morgan Greenwood drove in the first two Blue Demon runs of the contest with a two-run double down the left field line.

Georgia Tech (8-7) cut DePaul’s lead in half in the bottom of the third with an RBI-single by Katie Krzus.  An inning later, the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI-double from relief pitcher Cameron Stanford.

The Blue Demons bounced back into the lead in the top of the sixth, plating four runs for the 6-2 advantage.  DePaul capitalized on a Yellow Jacket miscue to regain the 3-2 lead as a throwing error by Georgia Tech’s pitcher allowed second baseman Haydn Christensen to score.  With the bases loaded, Yellow Jacket reliever Brooke Barfield walked the next two Blue Demon batters to increase DePaul’s gap to 5-2.  With just one out in the inning, Leyva provided the fourth and final run of the rally with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

In their final inning at the plate, the Blue Demons added two insurance runs off a two-run single by shortstop Maranda Gutierrez to push DePaul’s lead to 8-2.

Sophomore Missy Zoch (7-2) powered through her sixth complete game of 2018, surrendering just two earned runs on five hits.  The right-hander struck out a season-high 10 batters, increasing her season total to 56.

DePaul returns to the field on Saturday where it faces Kennesaw State in doubleheader action on day two of the I-75 Challenge.  First pitch from Bailey Park in Kennesaw, Ga., is set for 1 p.m. Central.
