Verdun's Blasts Make It Eight in a Row
March 10, 2012
MIAMI - That didn't take long.
No. 25 DePaul came out swinging---and connecting---in Saturday's 12-0, five-inning victory over Delaware at the FIU Invitational.
Kirsten Verdun had two home runs and five RBIs in sparking the Blue Demons to their eighth win in a row and 11th in the last 12 games.
After DePaul coach Eugene Lenti expressed his disappointment with what he described as underachieving wins on Friday, his players were on the attack from the opening pitch.
DePaul (14-4) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, beginning with Samantha Dodd's one-out double and Verdun's blast beyond the center-field fence.
Mary Connolly reached on an error and Katelyn Braget singled to center. Ali Warren's line-drive single to right brought Connolly and Braget home. Bree Brown followed Warren with a two-run home run to left.
Lenti always preaches to his players about adding onto an early lead. Lynsey Ciezki led off the second inning with a walk and advanced to third on base hits by Dodd and Verdun. Connolly's walk made it 7-0.
These Blue Demons weren't satisfied with the seven runs. In the third, Warren, Brown and Ciezki had singles to load the bases.
Dodd came through with a two-run single to right. Verdun followed with a three-run blast, again clearing the center-field fence. That made it 12-0 after three innings.
Winning pitcher Brown (4-0) made certain Delaware (3-16) could never entertain any thoughts of a comeback. The junior right-hander limited the Blue Hens to a Lara Andrews single in the fourth inning.
Brown's one-hitter was highlighted by 10 strikeouts and one walk. She averaged two strikeouts per inning and went 2-for-2 in the batter's box with a home run, two RBIs and two runs.
After not hitting a home run in her first 16 games, Verdun has hit three in the last two games.
The Blue Demons will face host Florida International Saturday afternoon in their final game of the FIU Invitational.
