LAS VEGAS – The DePaul softball team went toe-to-toe with the nation’s top-ranked squad, Washington, on Saturday morning as the Blue Demons were edged 5-2 in their final game of the Rebel Classic.

Washington (26-0) went up 2-0 in the opening inning of play as Julia DePonte lifted a two-run home run over the right-center field fence.  Three innings later, the Huskies used an RBI-single by Nawai Kaupe to increase their lead to 3-0.

In the sixth, the Huskies would add a fourth run with a bases-loaded, fielder’s choice chopper to short.

DePaul (16-7) rallied behind three hits in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2.  Left fielder Kate Polucha led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to third on a double to right-center by right fielder Megan Leyva. Six pitches later, catcher Jessica Cothern drove in DePaul’s first run of the day with an RBI-single to right.  Kayla Landwehrmier came on to pinch run for Cothern and through a stolen base at second, an erred throw by the Huskies’ catcher allowed Leyva to score DePaul’s second run of the inning.

The Huskies added a final run on a wild pitch with runners on second and third, increasing their lead to 5-2.

Kennedy Garcia (1-2) was credited with the loss, surrendering three earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.  Freshman Pat Moore provided the Blue Demons with three innings of relief in the contest, striking out four while allowing two runs on two hits.
