March 15, 2014
FULLERTON, Calif. - Kirsten Verdun fired a complete game, claiming her 10th win of the season as DePaul beat the Titan Classic hosts, Cal State Fullerton, 5-2 in the second half of its Saturday doubleheader at Anderson Field.
The Blue Demons improved to 16-6 overall behind their senior ace, who struck out nine, and earned a weekend split by winning both Saturday contests. Cal State Fullerton dropped to 17-12 overall with the setback.
Mary Connolly smacked her team-leading sixth homer in the first inning to give her team the early lead, while Morgan Maize and Nicole Pihl also added run-scoring hits for the Blue Demons. Shortstop Allie Braden went 2-for-4, crossing the plate twice.
DePaul led 1-0 off Connolly's blast through three full innings before Braden connected on a lead-off single to start the Blue Demon fourth. She would eventually come around to score on a base hit by Maize, giving DePaul a 2-0 advantage.
The Titans got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot to make it 2-1 and held it there until the top of the sixth when DePaul added three more runs to pull away.
The frame began with a Braden double before a ground out and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Kali Gardner, who worked a full count before drawing an RBI walk to score Braden. Batting next, Pihl singled on a shot down the right field line to bring in two more Blue Demons and solidify the lead.
Cal State Fullerton answered with a run in the home-half of the sixth, but Verdun struck out two-of-three in the seventh to retire the side in order and seal the win.
DePaul returns home next Saturday, March 22 for its home opening weekend, facing St. John's in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.
