DePaul Drops Easton Invite opener to #5/5 Oklahoma
March 16, 2018

Box Score

FULLERTON, Calif. – In the opening contest of the Easton Invitational, the DePaul softball team was defeated by #5/5 Oklahoma 9-1 in a five-inning, run-ruled contest.

In a strange start to the game, Oklahoma’s third baseman Sydney Romero hit a solo home run over the left field fence to put the Sooners up 1-0.  Prior to the home run, Romero hit into what was believed to be a ground ball out to second base, for the second out of the inning, but the home plate umpire overturned the play ruling that Romero hit the ball off the front of her foot for a foul ball.  On the next pitch, Romero sent a rise ball over the fence for the 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma (21-2) added to its lead with a second solo home run by Nicole Pendley in the second inning to push the Sooner advantage to 2-0.

The Sooners added three runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a two-run double by Romero and a DePaul throwing error to take a 5-0 lead.

DePaul (16-8) cut the Sooners’ advantage to 5-1 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by catcher Jessica Cothern.

In the top of the fourth, Oklahoma regained an eight-run, 9-1 lead. Senior Kennedy Garcia came on in relief for DePaul’s sophomore starter Krista Dalgarn in the top of the fourth and gave up four runs off an RBI-single by Romero, a bases-loaded walk and hit batsman, and a fielder’s choice grounder to short.

Dalgarn (0-1) suffered the loss in her first start of 2018.  The right-hander gave up five earned runs on six hits in three innings of work.

The Blue Demons are back in action at 7:30 p.m. when they face Easton Invitational host Cal State Fullerton.
