Third Time is Not the Charm Against No. 9/10 Texas
March 17, 2013
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Blue Demons took on one of the top college softball teams in the country on Saturday night and came out on the short end.
DePaul fell to No. 9/10 Texas 8-3 in its final game of the Judi Garman Classic.
The Blue Demons will come home Sunday after going 1-4 in southern California and dropping to 13-12 on the season.
Texas (27-4) beat DePaul for the third time this season and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A base hit, two stolen bases, an error and a wild pitch led to an early deficit.
DePaul did get one run back in the bottom of the first after back-to-back singles by Allie Braden and Samantha Dodd, a Kirsten Verdun groundout and Megan Coronado's RBI groundout. Braden went 4-for-4 and scored two runs against the Longhorns.
Texas scored a run in the second inning on a pair of singles, a stolen base and an error. The Blue Demons committed four errors in the game.
After adding a single run in the fourth, the Longhorns put this one away with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning.
Taylor Hoagland's solo home run and Lindsey Stephens' RBI triple led the way against DePaul pitcher Verdun. Texas led 8-1 after five innings.
The Blue Demons scored a run in the sixth inning after Mary Connolly led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Brittany Boesel. Paige Peterson followed with a double to right-center that brought Boesel home.
But Peterson was cut down as she tried to stretch her double into a triple.
Braden led off the seventh inning with a base hit to right field. Verdun came through with a one-out single and Megan Coronado walked to load the bases. Connolly's grounder to shortstop brought Braden home.
DePaul will regroup before opening the BIG EAST Conference season with a double-header next Saturday at Providence.
NOTES: This was the Blue Demons' third loss in a row... DePaul had 11 hits against the Longhorns led by Braden going 4-for-4 and scoring twice... Peterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI... Dodd, Verdun, Connolly (RBI, run), Staci Bonezek and Kali Gardner each had one hit... Verdun (9-6) went the distance and gave up four earned runs on 13 hits with eight strikeouts.
