CHICAGO - DePaul was certainly ready for some good old-fashioned home cooking on Friday after being on the road for the first 28 games of the 2013 softball season.

But a strong performance by Pittsburgh starter Alexa Larkin ruined the home opener in a 2-0 Blue Demon loss at Cacciatore Stadium.

Larkin held an explosive DePaul attack to a pair of hits in the opener of Friday's doubleheader.

Pittsburgh struck in the top of the first inning on a walk to Ashlee Sills and back-to-back RBI doubles by Carissa Throckmorton and Kaila Balatgek.

Paige Peterson got the first hit of the home season in the bottom of the second but was erased on a fielder's choice.

Starting pitcher Kirsten Verdun singled in the fourth, but pinch-runner Amanda Mener was forced out at second.

Pitt starter Alexa Larkin limited the Blue Demons to a pair of hits over the first five innings.

Back-to-back walks to Mary Connolly and Verdun put runners on first and second with two out in the sixth. Peterson hit a shot to center that carried right to the Panthers' Carly Thea.

DePaul dropped to 16-13, 3-1 in the BIG EAST while Pitt improved to 14-13, 3-1.
