Connolly's Go-Ahead Double Sends Softball to 3-1 Win at Illinois State
April 9, 2014
NORMAL, Ill. - Mary Connolly delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the fifth as DePaul hung on for its seventh-straight win, 3-1, on Wednesday at Illinois State.
DePaul improved to 25-8 overall behind some timely hitting and another dominant performance in the circle by senior Kirsten Verdun. The Blue Demons' senior ace improved to 17-5 by striking out 10 Redbirds over seven innings of one-run ball.
Verdun also kick-started the offense with a lead-off home run to left, marking her second straight outing with a game-opening blast.
Illinois State battled back in the second, however, crossing the plate on a passed ball to tie things up at 1-1.
The contest remained square until the fifth when Verdun drew a one-out walk. Pinch runner Marsha' Pendilton then advanced to second on a ground out before Connolly ripped a double to give DePaul a 2-1 lead with her 28th RBI of the season.
Leading 2-1 in the seventh, Allie Braden connected for a one-out double to right center. Connolly followed by working a walk before Christensen added an insurance run with a base hit up the middle to score Braden.
DePaul returns to action on Thursday, playing Loyola in an "away" game at Cacciatore Stadium -- the event was originally scheduled to be played at Loyola, but poor field conditions forced the move to Lincoln Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT.
