Blue Demons Win 14th Straight, Beat Creighton 7-3
Morgan Maize ripped a two-run double in the third inning and went 2-for-3 with a walk as DePaul stayed perfect in BIG EAST play.

OMAHA, Neb. - DePaul softball jumped in front 4-0 early and cruised to a 7-3 win in the second half of a doubleheader on Friday at Creighton.

It was the 14th consecutive win for the Blue Demons, who won 6-4 in the first game of Friday's twinbill. DePaul improved to 32-8 and 12-0 in the BIG EAST Conference with the win.

Creighton dropped to 25-18 overall and 6-7 in the conference with the setback.

Kirsten Verdun set the all-time mark for games started (133) at DePaul when she toed the rubber in the first inning and went five innings, striking out seven and allowing three runs to improve to 23-5. Hannah Pennathen came on in relief, allowing just one hit over the final two innings to seal the win.

Freshman Dylan Christensen (2-for-4, R) and sophomore Morgan Maize (2-for-3, 2 RBI) led the Blue Demons at the plate, while senior Megan Coronado added two RBI. Mary Connollyadded an RBI with her 11th homer of the season in the sixth.

DePaul got on the board first, scoring on an error before Gena Lenti'sdouble to center brought around Coronado to make it 2-0.

Maize added a two-run double in the third inning to make it a 4-0 lead before Creighton answered in the bottom frame with a two-run single by Allie Reinhart.

Coronado then ripped a double to left center with two outs in the fifth, scoring Maize and Marsha' Pendiltonto give the Blue Demons a 6-2 lead.

Creighton's Liz Dike hit her second homer of the day in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3, but Connolly got the run right back for DePaul with a solo shot to left field to cap the scoring for the day.

DePaul and Creighton will wrap the weekend series with a single game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Notes: DePaul is now riding a 14-game winning streak, their best since 2011 (16 games)... Verdun's start moved her into sole possession of first-place all-time at DePaul, passing current associate head coach Lindsay Chouinard (132 starts, 2000-03)... Allie Braden saw a season-high 13 game hitting streak come to a close, as well as a 18-game streak of reaching base... Connolly hit her team-leading 11th longball of the season... Verdun's win was the 95th of her career... she has collected wins in 10 of her last 11 appearances (the other appearance was a save) and has not lost since March 26 at Louisville...
