DePaul Falls to No. 24/24 USF in First Game of Doubleheader
April 20, 2013
Round one of DePaul's critical three-game BIG EAST Conference series against No. 24/24 USF resulted in a 3-0 Blue Demons loss Saturday at Cacciatore Stadium.
The opener Saturday's doubleheader was characterized by good defensive play from both teams. However, an early offensive surge by USF resulted in a 3-0 lead that the Blue Demons could not overcome against Bulls ace Sara Nevins (19-5).
In the first inning, DePaul (23-15, 10-2 in the BIG EAST) gave up a three-run home run to Kenshyra Jackson. After that, the Blue Demons struggled at the plate with no hits in the first two innings.
Things picked up for DePaul in the bottom of the third inning. Samantha Dodd beat out a throw to first on a hustle play, recording her team's first hit. Soon after, the Blue Demons had the bases loaded with two outs. The inning ended with a strikeout by Paige Peterson.
DePaul stayed solid defensively, letting up no additional hits until the fifth inning thanks to the pitching of Hannah Penna (8-6). However, offensive chances were few and far between for DePaul as well.
USF (36-12, 14-1) finished with six hits and the three runs, while Blue Demons wound up with one hit.
