Blue Demons Smash Four Home Runs in 11-0 Win Over St. John's
April 24, 2013
QUEENS, N.Y - Allie Braden leading off the game Wednesday with a home run over the right-field fence was a sign of things to come.
Solo shots by Bree Brown and Megan Coronado in the fourth inning and a Kirsten Verdun two-run blast in the fifth powered DePaul to an 11-0, five-inning victory over St. John's in the opener of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader.
After Braden's ultimate leadoff at-bat, the Blue Demons went scoreless the next two innings.
But Brown led off the fourth with a home run that hit the scoreboard beyond the left-field fence. Two batters later, Coronado cleared the fence in right-center. Gena Lenti singled to center, Braden and Samantha Dodd walked and Mary Connolly recorded an RBI walk. Verdun followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.
DePaul (25-16, 12-3 in the BIG EAST) imposed the eight-run rule an inning later. Verdun's two-run shot, a Coronado RBI double and Braden's RBI double highlighted a six-run outburst that included two runs scoring on an error during a squeeze bunt.
This was the most runs scored by the Blue Demons since a 16-2 win at Syracuse on April 7. DePaul came into the week leading the BIG EAST in home runs.
Verdun had two hits and three RBIs while Braden had two hits, two RBIs and three runs. Coronado finished with a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs and Dodd had two hits and an RBI. Gena Lenti also checked in with a couple of hits.
In the circle, Verdun (17-9) came away with a five-hit shutout, her fourth shutout of the season. The junior southpaw struck out five and walked one.
Hannah Penna was expected to start for DePaul in game two against St. John's (12-32-1, 3-12).
