LEXINGTON, Ky. – DePaul softball grabbed the first lead of the afternoon at the Lexington Regional, but a late comeback by Marshall pushed the Herd to a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Missy Zoch (14-9) pitched 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts. Jordan Dixon (32-9) earned the win after going eight innings and giving up just one earned run.

Jessica Cothern recorded DePaul’s first hit of the afternoon with her 11th double of the season to right field in the first inning. The Blue Demons were unable to convert on the opportunity after a pop fly to second base to end the inning.

After a scoreless first three innings, Micah Fitzgerald worked her way to a full count and drew a leadoff walk to start the fourth inning. Fitzgerald advanced to second base on a line drive from Cothern that was knocked down by the Marshall first baseman. Megan Leyva came to the plate with two outs and drove a ball to deep left field to bring home Fitzgerald.

In Marshall’s half of the fourth inning, the Herd placed runners on first and second with just one out. Alysia Rodriguez came up with two back-to-back defensive plays, bringing in a line drive from Elizabeth DeShields and finishing a fielder’s choice to preserve the DePaul lead.

Dylan Christensen started the top of the sixth with a single to centerfield. Celeste Franco came into the game to pinch run and made it to third base after a Marshall fielding error at third base allowed Nicole Pihl to reach base. An intentional walk of Leyva loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the rally on the next at-bat.

Marshall’s Elicia D’Orazio singled up the middle to start the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. D’Orazio went on to steal third and was caught in a rundown after a missed bunt attempt in the same at-bat. DePaul threw down to third to get the out, but D’Orazio quickly turned and scored the tying run.

Shaelynn Braxton advanced all the way to third after a leadoff single at the beginning of the eighth inning. With two out, Abigail Estrada sent a single just over the heads of the DePaul infield and brought home the game-winning run.

The loss ends DePaul’s season as the Blue Demons finish 29-23 overall.
