Verdun Named to USA Softball Top 50 Watch List
Feb. 7, 2013
CHICAGO – DePaul ace Kirsten Verdun has been named as one of the top 50 Division I college softball players in the country.
Verdun, a second-team NFCA All-American in 2012, was selected for the pre-season Top 50 Watch List for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award presented annually by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) and USA Softball.
The Top 25 Finalists will be announced on April 10 and the Top 10 on May 8. The field will be down to three final candidates on May 22. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be announced on May 28 in Oklahoma City, Okla. prior to the start of the Women’s College World Series.
Verdun was 27-15 in the pitching circle last season with a 1.62 ERA. Her 266 strikeouts was the second-best season mark in DePaul history. She set school records for games started and innings pitched in a season.
Verdun finished No. 17 in the nation in shutouts, No. 19 in wins and No. 25 in strikeouts.
Offensively, the junior from Coal City, Ill. batted.363 with team highs in home runs with 11, RBIs with 41, doubles (12), hits (61) and walks (29).
“It’s a great honor for Kirsten and for DePaul,” said Blue Demons coach Eugene Lenti. “It’s a testament to how much hard work she puts in every day.
“She was the BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman, an All-American last year---and is still working to improve her game. That’s a big reason why Kirsten has gotten better every year.”
Verdun and the Blue Demons open their season Friday against UCF at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas.
