Softball Tops No. 7 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 11 Blue Demons (4-0) dropped No. 7 LSU (3-1) in a 4-0 decision after defeating Baylor (6-4) in day two of the LSU Tiger Classic on Saturday.

The Blue Demons topped Baylor for the second time in the tournament despite the Bears out-hitting DePaul 8-3.

DePaul gained their first run in the top of the first inning.  Liz Bouck walked, advanced to third on an error and sacrifice bunt and was sent home as Gina Ramacci grounded out to Baylor’s shortstop.

Baylor answered back in the second inning with a home run by Sarah Caudle but it wasn’t enough to send the Bears into a run.

By the sixth inning, the Blue Demons had increased the lead by two when a single by Katy Kukman sent in two runners, Sarah Martz and Liz Bouck.

Martz notched a win as she pitched 5 1/3 innings while Lindsay Chouinard came in for the save, handling the last 1 2/3 innings with ease.

With a record of 3-0 under their belt, DePaul went on to face No. 7 LSU.  Tensions ran high as the two nationally recognized teams went head-to-head, but ultimately the women of the Midwest prevailed under Chouinard’s near no-hitter.

The Blue Demons started the game off strong.  Liz Bouck and Sarah Martz put themselves on base with two bunts in a row.  Then Ramacci advanced to first on a fielder’s choice.  The game jumped to 2-0 when Sarah Douglas doubled to left center sending in Ramacci and Martz.

DePaul had taken its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Dana Kenney drove in Kukman on a single and Douglas stole home.

The Blue Demons continued to hold off the Tigers for the rest of the game, largely in part to Chouinard’s five strikeouts in seven innings.  Chouinard was two outs away from pitching a perfect game when Sara Fitzgerald singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.

Douglas was 2-for-3 and had two RBIs for the Blue Demons while Kukman tallied seven assists for the game.

The Blue Demons face Baylor again tomorrow for the third time at 10 a.m. and will not play the championship game regardless of the 10 a.m. outcome due to travel arrangements.
