Blue Demons Win Two in Hawai'i

HONOLULU – The DePaul softball team defeated No. 24 Auburn and took a game from host Hawai'i on Saturday at the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Stadium. DePaul advances to the Championship game on Sunday, facing Portland State at 4 p.m. (CST).


The Blue Demons combined for 16 hits on the day with seniors Kate Sheaks and Linda Secka each scattering three hits while Amber Patton, Becca Heteniak and Marcy Wilus each knocked two hits.


Senior pitcher Tracie Adix (3-0) recorded both wins for DePaul.  Adix threw the final four innings against Auburn and threw a complete game shutout against the Hawai'i.  In 11 innings of work, Adix scattered six hits and walked zero batters.

The Blue Demons (3-2) posted a season-high 11 hits in the win, and utilized the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning. Amber Patton was placed on second to start the inning and scored with two outs on a wild pitch by Auburn reliever Anna Thompson.


Center fielder, Linda Secka led the Blue Demons for the fifth time this season at the plate.  She went 3-for-4 at the plate, while left fielder Kate Sheaks and first baseman Becca Heteniak each registered two hits on the day.  Heteniak also collected a team-high three RBI.


The two teams traded the lead in the first four innings.  The Blue Demons recorded two runs in the first on Heteniak's single to center field – plating Secka and Sheaks, who led off the game with singles.


The Tigers (1-4) used a pair of two-run home runs to take a 4-2 advantage into the third inning.  Holly Currie sent her two-run shot over the left field fence in the first, while Sara Ghezzi's two-run home run came in the bottom of the second frame. 


Heteniak again, gave the Blue Demons a boost as she sent her second RBI-single of the game through the right side in the third inning. 


DePaul right fielder Stephanie Blagaich tied the ballgame at four, with one swing of the bat, sending her solo shot over the center field wall.


Megan Huitink got the start for the Blue Demons in the circle before Tracie Adix entered the game in the fourth.  Huitink scattered three hits while striking out three.  Adix (2-0) struck out six and allowed three hits in her four innings of work to earn the win.


Brittany Day threw the first 2.1 innings before being relieved by Thompson, who suffered the loss.  Thompson struck out 10, but gave up two runs to fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Blue Demons used a pair of home runs and heads up base running to top Hawai'i and advance to the Championship game on Sunday against Portland State.


Adix threw a complete shutout against UH.  The senior pitcher struck out seven batters while scattering four hits and walking zero.


The Blue Demon offense took control of the game in the third inning.  With one out, Kate Sheaks sent a line drive shot over the centerfield fence.  Following Sheaks' bomb, Sandy Vojik provided an encore performance as she sent her long ball over the left field wall.


Amber Patton's heads-up base running netted the Blue Demons their third and final run of the ballgame.  Patton capitalized on UH starter Justine Smethurst pass ball.


Vojik put an exclamation point on her performance as she caught a line-drive in the bottom of seventh and doubled-up a Hawai'i runner at second base to end the ballgame.


Smethurst (2-1) threw five innings and gave up four hits before Jessica Morton entered the ball game in the six frame.


Notes:  Kate Sheaks and Stephanie Blagaich each registered their first home runs of the season… Sandy Vojik's home run against Hawai'i was her second of the season.  Tracie Adix has thrown 19.0 innings and has yet to give up an earned run and has walked just one batter.
