DePaul Blanks College of Charleston
ATHENS, Ga. The No. 10/8 DePaul softball team closed out the University of Georgia's Red and Black Classic with 4-0 victory over the College of Charleston on Sunday at the UGA Softball Stadium. The Blue Demons improve to 4-2, while the College of Charleston fell to 0-5.
DePaul pitchers Lauren Frankiewicz and Lindsey Dean threw a five pitch shutout. Frankiewicz got the start in the circle and threw six innings before being replaced by Dean. Frankiewicz scattered four hits and struck out six while walking one.
College of Charleston had the first chance to score as Brittney Small sent a one-out triple to the wall in right field in the third inning. However, Small took too large of a lead and was picked off by a fast reacting Jackie Tarulli-Fisher from behind the plate for the second out of the inning. Frankiewicz then got the final batter to fly out to left field to end the inning for the C of C.
The Blue Demons scored two runs in the third frame with just one hit. Amber Patton and Tara Voss took back-to-back walks and both advanced on a double steal to set up Jackie Tarulli-Fisher's sacrifice fly. With Voss on third Sandy Vojik connected on a RBI single to center to give DePaul a 2-0 lead.
DePaul tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Vojik again singled and came around to score on a dropped fly ball in right field. The Blue Demon's final run also came on a Cougar error as pinch runner Sarah Shizas scored on a failed pick off attempt at third.
College of Charleston's Shannon Howard (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars.
The Blue Demons return to the field, February 15-17 at the University of Houston's Crowne Plaza Classic. DePaul plays Texas A&M CC, Army, and host Houston during the three-day tournament.
