Houston Tops DePaul
HOUSTON - No. 23 Houston halted the No. 14/13 DePaul softball team winning streak at five by defeating the Blue Demons 5-0, Friday at the Crowne Plaza Classic at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston stays perfect on the season and improves to 5-0 while the Blue Demons fall 5-3. The Cougars got their bats going in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and capitalized on a Blue Demon fielding error. Jennifer Klinkert knocked a two-run single with one out and Laurie Wagner followed with a RBI double off the left field fence. Klinkert again sparked the Cougars with a solo home run to begin the bottom of third and Houston tacked on two more runs to take a 5-0 lead at the end three. The Blue Demons had their best chance to score in the fifth frame when Shea Warren and Alex Morocco slapped back-to-back singles. However, DePaul would leave both stranded as the next three batters were retired by Houston starter Angel Shamblin. Shamblin (3-0) threw a complete game for the Cougars. She struck six and walked zero. Heteniak (2-3) took the loss and threw the first two innings before being replaced by Lindsey Dean. Heteniak walked three and scattered four hits for four runs. Dean was in the circle for the final four innings and struck out four while giving up five hits and a single run. Morocco led DePaul's offensive attack with a 2-for-2 effort. The Blue Demons finished with five hits on the afternoon. DePaul returns to the diamond on Saturday and is slated to face Army and Texas A&M CC. Games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively, but the forecast in Houston calls for a 70 percent chance rain so the schedule could be altered.
