Softball Struggles against Portland State
HENDERSON, Nev. - Portland State topped DePaul 8-1 in the Louisville Slugger/UNLV Desert Classic finale on Sunday at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. The win snaps the Blue Demons four-game winning streak as they fall to 4-1 on the young season. Portland State improves to 4-5. PSU struck first, scoring a run in both the first and second innings. Up 2-0, the Vikings tagged Blue Demon starter Becca Heteniak (2-1) with two runs in the fifth. Annie Demas knocked her third double of the season in the sixth inning to put the Blue Demons on the board. Demas’ third RBI of the season scored Lynsey Ciezki, who drew a walk earlier in the frame. Heading into the top of the seven, Portland State connected on back-to-back-to-back home runs to prompt a DePaul pitching change. Dean entered the circle for DePaul and faced four batters to end the game. The Vikings scored four runs in the seventh. Heteniak gave up 12 hits, struck out three and walked three. Jackie Heide led Portland State at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort. Heide knocked two home runs and singled in the Viking win. Tori Rogers (2-0) picked up the win for Portland State, she allowed three hits. Next weekend DePaul travels to Florida for games with Michigan State, Fairfield, Bethune Cookman and tournament host Florida Gulf Coast. The Blue Demons take on Michigan State and Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 4 and 8 p.m., respectively.
