Softball Guts Out 4-3 Win over Texas A&M C-C

HOUSTON   The No. 14/13 DePaul softball team gutted out a 4-3 rain delayed win over Texas A&M C-C Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Classic at the Cougar Softball Stadium.  The win improves the Blue Demons to 7-3, while the Islanders fall to 2-3.

Locked in a pitchers duel through four and a half innings, it was the Blue Demons who finally broke the scoreless tie.  Marcy Wilus drew a seven pitch walk and pinch hitter Marie Thompson drove her in with a double to right center.

Running for Thompson, Alex Morocco reached third on a wild pitch and scored when Sean Plese laid down a fielder's choice that scored Morocco, who slid to avoid the tag at home.  DePaul took a 2-0 lead into the top sixth.

The Islanders responded in the sixth and had a runner at third with no outs; but Heteniak was able retire the next three batters and end the scoring threat.

The bottom of the sixth saw Jackie Tarulli-Fisher smash her third home run of the season to give DePaul its third run of the ballgame in.

TAMUCC came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh.  With one out, Becca Heteniak walked a batter and an error at second put runners on first and second.  Heteniak got the next batter to ground out, but the skies opened up and forced a rain delay.

When play resumed thirty minutes later in the rain, Heteniak hit her first batter to load the bases for Lauren Sanders, who looped a base-clearing triple down a soaked left field line to knot the game at three.

Playing through the rain, TAMUCC pitcher Heather Rush walked two of the first four batter she faced.  With the game on the line and two outs, Tarulli-Fisher drilled a shot at the third baseman, but an off balance throw was not handled well by Islander first baseman Larissa Martin and a sprinting Plese was able to score from second and secure a Blue Demon victory.

Heteniak (3-3) threw a complete game for the Blue Demons scattering three hits, while walking two and striking out five.

Rush (1-2) allowed three hits and struck out two.

The Blue Demons close out the Crowne Plaza Classic on Sunday with host Houston at 11 a.m.  The Cougars defeated DePaul 5-0 on Friday.
