Softball Rallies Past Army
HOUSTON The No. 14/13 DePaul softball team used a six-run seventh inning to rally past Army for a 6-2 victory, Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Classic at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Blue Demons improve to 6-3, while Army falls to 0-3. Down by two, Marcy Wilus blasted her first home run of the season to give the Blue Demon bench new life in the top of the seventh. Blagaich followed with her second base knock of the afternoon and Brittney Yniguez bunted for a single to place runners at first and third for pinch hitter Marie Thompson. Thompson laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to knot the game at two. Two batters later Morocco smashed a two-RBI single down the left field line to give the Blue Demons their first lead of the game. An Army throwing error allowed DePaul to plate its final runs and give the Blue Demons a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. As the wind changed direction and started blowing out Army's Erin McClain took advantage and sent a two-run line drive home run over the left field fence to give the Black Knights a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third frame. Army's lead would stand until the seventh as the Blue Demon defense made SportsCenter quality plays that ended innings and scoring chances for the Black Knights. DePaul's defense made back-to-back unbelievable plays in the bottom of the fifth. After Tara Voss and Wilus teamed-up to turn a routine grounder the left side of the infield got into the action. Amber Patton leaped into the air to snag a line drive and Yniguez followed by diving to her right to catch a line drive and end the inning for Army. Lauren Frankiewicz got the start for the Blue Demons but was relieved in the fourth by Lindsey Dean. Frankiewicz gave up two hits, two earned runs and struck out three while walking three in three innings of work. Dean (1-0) was in the circle for the last three innings to earn her first win of the season. Dean allowed just one hit, struck out four, including the side in the sixth inning and did not allow a run. Veronica Barth (1-1) threw six innings for the Black Knights before being replaced by Nicole Talarczyk in the seventh. The duo scattered 10 hits and struck out two batters. The Blue Demons finish play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game with Texas A&M CC. DePaul defeated the Islanders on Friday, 2-0.
