DePaul Softball Sweeps Weekly BIG EAST Honors
Feb. 17, 2014
NEW YORK - DePaul softball swept the BIG EAST Conference weekly awards on Monday after going 4-1 to take the championship at the College of Charleston Classic over the weekend. Kirsten Verdun was named Player of the Week and Mary Connolly earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Verdun, who has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week five times, earned Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career after recording hits in all five games this weekend and leading DePaul with seven hits. She blasted her first homer of the season against Fordham, moving into a tie for third all-time at DePaul, and tied for the team-lead with a .500 batting average.
In the circle, Verdun saved the sixth game of her career after closing out the Friday win over WCU. She then tossed her third shutout – a four-hitter – of the season on Saturday against Ole Miss, moving into third all-time at DePaul with 27 career shutouts.
Connolly, who earned BIG EAST Player of the Week Honors once last season, was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week for the first time after the best outing of her career on Saturday. The junior from Winfield, Ill. worked a one-hit shutout against Fordham, the preseason A-10 favorite. In an 8-0 DePaul win, Connolly was dominant throughout and did not yield a hit through six innings. The shutout was the first of her career and it was her second complete game of the season.
Also a threat at the plate, Connolly recorded two hits and three RBI in the win against Fordham. Against Kansas, she kick-started Sunday’s come-from-behind win with her first home run of the season.
The Blue Demons are back in action next weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. DePaul kicks the weekend off with a game against Massachusetts on Friday, Feb. 21 at 10:00 a.m. CT.
