Softball Heads to Florida for the FGCU Spring Break Invitational this Weekend

CHICAGO The No. 13/13 DePaul softball team heads to Florida for the FGCU Spring Break Invitational, Feb. 20-22 and takes on Michigan State, Bethune Cookman, Fairfield and host Florida Gulf Coast. The Blue Demons open play on Friday with a 3 p.m. with Michigan State.

DePaul (4-1) began the 2009 season at the Louisville Slugger/UNLV Desert Classic last weekend and was led by the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week Becca Heteniak.  The junior right handed pitcher led Blue Demons with a .533 batting average behind, four doubles a home run and eight RBI.  DePaul defeated then-No. 6/5 Michigan, Oregon State, Southern Miss and Kentucky, but dropped the tournament finale to Portland State.

The FGCU Spring Break Invitational features five teams with the Blue Demons squaring off with Michigan State (3-2) and tournament host FGCU (7-3) twice; each once on Friday and again on Saturday.  On Sunday DePaul faces Fairfield (2-8) and Bethune Cookman (0-0) on Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m., respectively.

The Blue Demons hold a 4-2 series advantage over the Spartans with their last meeting coming in 1999 with DePaul walking away with a 2-0 victory and advancing to the program’s first Women’s College World Series.

DePaul’s games with FGCU, Bethune Cookman and Fairfield marks the first meeting between the two programs.

Following the FGCU Spring Break Invitational, the Blue Demons head to the NFCA Lead Off Classic, Feb. 28-Mar. 1
