BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK - Off to a scorching start in her collegiate softball career, DePaul's Nicole Pihl was recognized as the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week for the first time on Monday. Senior Hannah Penna was also nominated to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Pihl's honor marked the second straight week a DePaul student-athlete has taken home a player of the week award. The Blue Demons have now won four of the conference's first six weekly awards during the first three weeks of the season.

It was a breakout weekend for Pihl, who hit her first career home run in Friday’s game against UMass. The Marseilles, Ill. native came off the bench as a pinch hitter in a 2-2 tie during the sixth and launched a two-run shot to bring in what would eventually be the winning runs in a 4-2 victory. In her very next plate appearance, she hit a three-run home run in the first inning of DePaul’s 8-0, five-inning rout of UConn. Pihl also accounted for DePaul’s lone run in a 3-1 loss to James Madison, putting the Blue Demons up 1-0 with a solo shot in the second inning.

Overall, Pihl leads the Blue Demons with a team-high eight-game hitting streak. During the run, she has batted .524 (11-for-21) with three homers and nine RBI.

She was named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the team to a 4-1 record while providing seven RBI and tying for the team-high with six hits and three homers in five games.

Penna was named to the weekly honor roll for the second time in her career after going 2-0 in the circle and allowing just one extra base hit over 10.2 innings. Against Rutgers, the Miami, Fla.-native provided 5.1 innings of one-run relief and also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI to help DePaul to a 10-6 comeback win. She was named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament Team and led the Blue Demons with a 1.31 ERA over the weekend.

The Blue Demons return to the diamond next weekend, travelling to Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic. DePaul will open play against Weber State, facing the Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. CT. UNLV, Binghamton and New Mexico State also feature on DePaul's schedule over the five-game weekend.
