Penn State Rallies to Top DePaul
COLUMBUS, Ga. Penn State used a four-run sixth to propel itself to a 4-1 victory over No. 13/13 DePaul, Friday in the first game of the NFCA Lead Off Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex.
DePaul (9-3) posted its only run of the ballgame in the first inning. Amber Patton extended her hitting streak to 12 games when she reached on an infield bunt single and came around to score on Becca Heteniak’s sacrifice fly.
The Blue Demons held onto their one run lead until the bottom of the sixth when Penn State (5-4) took advantage of two DePaul errors and then tagged Heteniak with three hits. Jackie Hill, Kayce Zielinski and Sam Hovanec all recorded RBI in the frame. All Penn State’s runs were unearned.
DePaul threatened to even the score in the top of the seventh as Heteniak took a walk and Jackie Tarulli-Fisher singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. The Blue Demons were unable to move the runners are the next two batters struck out and Tara Voss flew out to left field to end the game.
Jackie Hill (2-3) recorded the win. She struck out seven and walked two.
Heteniak (4-3) suffered the loss. She threw the complete game, struck out six and scattered seven hits.
Tonight's game with Georgia has been cancelled due to rain in Columbus, Ga.
