No. 19/19 DePaul Tops Massachusetts 2-1

Columbus,  Ga. DePaul senior Sandy Vojik connected on a RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of eighth to push the Blue Demons past Massachusetts, 2-1 Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The Blue Demons came from behind for the fourth time this season to pull out the victory.  UMass (4-8) stuck first in the fourth inning, but only after the Blue Demon defense stymied two scoring opportunities in the first and second innings.

The scored was knotted at zero until the top of the fourth when UMass’ Sarah Reeves lined her second hit of the afternoon down the left field line to score Whitney Mollica from second.

DePaul (8-4) would tied the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth when Brittney Yniguez looped a two-out RBI double into right center.

Utilizing the international tie breaker in the eight inning, DePaul pitcher Becca Heteniak got the first UMass batter to pop up and got her second batter to line out to Blue Demons right fielder Stephanie Blagaich.  Following the two-out catch Blagaich fired a shot to third baseman Amber Patton, who tagged Jill Andrews as she attempted to reach third on the play.

Tara Voss was placed at second to start the bottom of the eighth for DePaul.  Jackie Tarulli-Fisher laid down a perfect bunt to move Voss to third which set the stage for Vojik’s game-winning double.

Heteniak (3-2) earned the win for the Blue Demons and threw a complete game.  She struck out five and scattered nine hits.

Brandice Balschmiter (3-4) took the loss and also tossed a complete game.  Balschmiter allowed just five hits, walked four and struck out four.
