Blue Demons Fall to No. 2/3 Texas A&M
Columbus, Ga. No. 2/3 Texas A&M scored seven runs in the sixth inning and defeated No. 19/19 DePaul 8-0, Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex. Texas A&M improves to 19-2 on the season, while the Blue Demons slide to 8-5.
Before the Aggies broke through in the sixth frame Texas A&M pitcher Megan Gibson and DePaul starter Lindsey Dean engaged in a pitcher's duel both getting batters to strike and ground out. Gibson threw a one hitter and finished with a season-high eight strikeouts. After DePaul’s Amber Patton led off the ballgame with an infield single and Brittney Yniguez reached on a fielders choice, Gibson (10-0) was able to retire the next 18 Blue Demon batters in her zero walk performance.
In her first career start, Dean (1-1) sent five Aggies back to the dugout and before Texas A&M’s offense kicked into high gear in the sixth frame, Dean had allowed just four hits. However when the game finished in the sixth with one out the Aggies had tallied 11 total hits.
Texas A&M’s Natalie Vallarreal and Gibson each finished the day with a 2-for-4 effort. Gibson’s bases loaded two-RBI double in the sixth inning cemented the Aggie victory.
The NFCA Leadoff Classic continues on Saturday with the Blue Demons taking on Winthrop and Iowa. DePaul’s game with Eagles is slated for a 12:30 p.m. (CST) start and the first pitch of the Iowa game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Both games can be viewed live on GameTracker.
