DePaul Falls to Massachusetts
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 22/17 Massachusetts softball team topped No.13/13 DePaul 2-0 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex on Saturday. UMass (8-4) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Samantha Salato’s RBI single. UMass added its last run on Carly Normandin’s solo home run in the sixth frame. UMass pitcher Brandice Balschmiter (7-2) had a no-hitter going until the DePaul’s Annie Demas knocked an infield single with two outs in the seventh. Balschmiter struck out seven and walked one. DePaul starter Lindsey Dean (5-1) threw a complete game, she scattered seven hits, walked five and struck out three. The Blue Demons (9-4) finish the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday. They will take on Nebraska at 9 a.m.
