Heteniak Earns BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Honors
PROVIDENCE, R.I. DePaul sophomore All-American pitcher Becca Heteniak has earned the BIG EAST Conference's Pitcher of the Week honors and Connecticut freshman rightfielder Melissa Lucas has been named the league's Player of the Week.
Heteniak allowed only one earned run in 22 innings of work and went 3-0 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Feb. 29-March 2. The sophomore threw complete games and garnered wins over Massachusetts (2-1), Winthrop (4-0) and UC Santa Barbara (2-0). Heteniak finished the weekend with a 0.32 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Against the Gauchos, Heteniak retired her first seven batters and only allowed three hits in the win. Heteniak is 6-3 on the season and was named to the NFCA Lead Off Classic All-Tournament team.
Lucas led the Huskies to a 3-1 week at the Frost Cutlery Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn., with a .500 batting average, including six hits and three runs with 12 appearances at the plate. The freshman outfielder also totaled three RBI and three doubles.
Heteniak earned the League's Pitcher of the Week honors twice as a freshman. This is her first weekly honor this season.
The Blue Demons return to action March 6-9 at the Bingham Toyota Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State. DePaul squares off with Rhode Island, Fresno State, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, Houston and Cal Poly during the four-day tournament.
