Softball's Mary Connolly Named BIG EAST Player of the Week
March 3, 2014
NEW YORK - Junior Mary Connolly was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after hitting a ridiculous .875 and helping DePaul softball run the table at the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic. Senior Kirsten Verdun joined her on the conference's weekly honor roll.
The Blue Demons have now earned five of the eight weekly awards distributed during the spring season and have added another three honor roll nominations to their coffer.
Connolly made just one out in three games, going 7-for-8 at the plate with a home run and seven RBI as DePaul out-scored its opposition 30-8. She posted multi-RBI games in each win, recording three-hit games on Saturday and Sunday. The longball turned out to be the big blow, a three-run shot in a six-run second inning against New Mexico State on Sunday, leading to an 8-1 win.
It was the third career weekly honor for the Winfield, Ill. native, who also claimed BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 and her first BIG EAST Player of the Week award last season.
Verdun put together a 2-0 weekend in the circle, compiling a 2.50 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 14 innings. She recorded double-digit K totals in both starts and tied a season-high by fanning 12 against New Mexico State. Her complete game victory against Binghamton on Saturday was the 80th win of her career.
DePaul is idle this weekend and stands at 14-4 overall after winning 10 of its past 11 games. One more trip out West awaits the team at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic on March 14-15, where the Blue Demons will see competition from UNLV, Texas Tech, Canisius and the hosts at the two-day event.
