Big Bats Push Blue Demons Past Rhode Island
FRESNO, Calif. The No. 16/19 DePaul softball team used nine hits in its 3-2 victory over Rhode Island, Thursday at the Bingham Toyota Classic at the Bulldog Diamond. The Blue Demons have won their last five games and improve to 13-5 on the season, while the Rams fall to 1-6. Sandy Vojik, Amber Patton and Shea Warren each tallied two hits in the contest, with Patton and Warren each finishing with a 2-for-3 effort for DePaul. The Blue Demons got their bats going in the second inning and took advantage of two Rhode Island errors to plate three runs in the inning. After Becca Heteniak reached on an error Stephanie Blagaich roped a double down the right field line to score Heteniak. Alex Morocco followed with an infield single and a dropped ball at first base allowed Blagaich to score from second. The Blue Demons final run of the inning came when Vojik was caught in a rundown between first in second that allowed Morocco to score from third. The Rams got a run back in the bottom half of the second when Danielle Quimby sent a sacrifice fly to deep left field which scored Melissa Wilson, who doubled to begin the inning. Rhode Island continued to chip away at the Blue Demon lead as Leah DiBussolo knocked a RBI double to the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth which cut DePaul’s lead to 3-2. Lindsey Dean (3-1) got the start for the Blue Demons and threw four inning before being replaced by Heteniak in the circle. Dean allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one. Heteniak retired nine of the 10 batters she faced. The sophomore struck out seven and just walked one. Jill Anderson (1-6) suffered the loss in her complete game effort. All three of DePaul’s runs were unearned. The Blue Demons return to the diamond this evening and face host No. 23/21 Fresno State.
