Fresno State Tops Blue Demons
FRESNO, Calif. The No. 16/19 DePaul softball team’s seventh inning rally fell short as the Blue Demons dropped a 4-2 game at No. 23/21 Fresno State, Thursday at the Bingham Toyota Classic at the Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs snap DePaul’s five-game winning streak and improve to 18-3 on the season, while the Blue Demons fall to 13-6. Down 4-1 in the top of the seventh with two outs, DePaul pinch hitter Annie Demas was down to her last strike, when she belted a double off the center field fence to give the Blue Demons hope. Sandy Vojik followed and battled to a full count before she smashed a RBI single to left field to plate the Blue Demon’s second run of the ballgame. DePaul’s rally was cut short as Bulldog starter Morgan Melloh (12-1) struck out the Blue Demon's final batter to end the game. Fresno got on the board in the first inning as a failed pick off attempt sailed into left field and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. DePaul starter Lauren Frankiewicz (4-2) did not allow a Fresno hit until the third frame when Ashley White connected on a double to begin the inning. The Bulldog bats continued to find the sweet spots in Frankiewicz’s pitches as Haley Perkins tripled down the right field line and Caitlin Stiglich knocked a RBI single to give Fresno a 4-0 lead. Marcy Wilus was credited with a RBI and gave the Blue Demons their first run of the ballgame on a sacrifice fly in the fifth frame. Melloh allowed eight hits in the Bulldog win. She struck out nine and walked one. Only three of the Bulldog’s four runs were earned as Frankiewicz gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked three in the loss. The Blue Demons continue the Bingham Toyota Classic on Friday with a 5 p.m. (CST) game with Santa Clara.
