Softball Tops Sacramento State

Fresno, Calif.   Brittney Yniguez recorded her first collegiate home run in No. 16/19 DePaul’s 7-4 victory over Sacramento State, Saturday at the Bingham Toyota Classic at the Bulldog Diamond.  With the win, the Blue Demons improve to 15-6, while Hornets fall to 10-8.

After putting runners in scoring position in the first inning, the Blue Demons loaded the bases for pinch hitter Annie Demas in the bottom of the second.  A clutch hitter in the last two game, Demas came through again with a two-RBI single to right field.

Still in the second, and with runners on first and third, DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti called for a double steal which netted the Blue Demon’s third run of the ballgame.  Amber Patton followed with a RBI single up the middle to give the Blue Demons a 4-0 advantage at the end of two.

Yniguez gave the Blue Demons 7-0 lead with one swing of the bat in the third frame. The freshman’s first collegiate home run scored Sandy Vojik, who doubled to begin the frame and Wilus, who was hit by a pitch.

Sacramento State got two runs back in the top of the fourth on Kayla Meeks two-RBI single. The Hornets again added two more runs in seventh inning.

Sacramento States final runs of the ballgame came on Terri Caoagan’s two-run home run.

Lauren Frankiewicz (5-2) threw her fifth complete game for the win.  The junior scattered four hits, struck out five and walked two; however only three of Sacramento State’s four runs were earned.

Brittani Clifford (3-3) got the start for Hornets, but was replaced in the third inning after facing 15 batters.  Megan Schaefer threw the final 3.2 innings and gave up just one hit.

DePaul registered seven hits in the win, with Patton leading the offensive effort.  Patton, who is on a five-game hitting streak, finished the day with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

The Blue Demons finish the Bingham Toyota Classic on Sunday with games against No. 14/15 Houston and Cal Poly.  DePaul and the Cougars square off at 11 a.m. and the game with the Mustangs follows twenty minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
