No. 16/19 DePaul Powers Past No. 14/15 Houston
FRESNO, Calif. The No. 16/19 DePaul softball team powered past No. 14/15 Houston 5-3, Sunday at the Bingham Toyota Classic at the Bulldog Diamond. The Blue Demons improve to 16-6 on the season, while Houston falls to 20-3. After DePaul starter Becca Heteniak retired Houston’s first three batters with five pitches; she helped her own cause in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double to right center to give the Blue Demons an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Demon offense continued to heat up as Amber Patton and Jackie Tarulli-Fisher led off the third with back-to-back doubles to plate DePaul’s third run of the ballgame. Down 3-0, the Cougars got on the board in the fourth. Houston had runners on second and third with two outs when Heteniak’s pitch got away from Tarulli-Fisher which allowed Cougar pinch runner Katy Beth Sherman to score. Sandy Vojik brought the Blue Demon fans to their feet in the fourth with a two-run line-drive home run to straight away center. The home run was Vojik’s second of the season and scored Shea Warren, who reached on a single to left field. The Cougars had a comeback on their mind in the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs for Amanda Grote, who sent a two-RBI double to the fence in center. Looking to tie the game, they loaded the bases for the second time with one out; but Heteniak would get the final two Cougars batters to strikeout and end the inning and the threat. Heteniak (8-3) threw her ninth complete game of the season for the win. The sophomore scattered five hits, struck out six and walked five. Baillie Lott (4-1) took the loss for the Cougars. She walked a pair and struck out two. The Blue Demons tallied 10 hits in the victory with Warren leading the charge with a 3-for-3 showing a the plate. Patton and Tarulli-Fisher followed with two hits apiece. The Blue Demons close out the Bingham Toyota with a 1 p.m. (CST) game with Cal Poly.
